Let’s be safe at Lighthouse Lagoon

Learn your water safety skills with Saffi our Safety officer

Under the watchful gaze of the old lighthouse, you’ll find floats aplenty as the children are put through their paces to learn key water safety skills.

At Water Babies water safety is at the heart of everything we do. Learning to swim is about more than strokes and splashing, it’s about teaching children how to be safe, confident, and calm in and around water from the earliest age.

We believe every child should have the skills to enjoy water safely, whether they’re in a swimming pool, at the beach, or by a lake. That’s why water safety is built into every stage of our swimming lessons.

What we teach in water safety lessons

  • Entering and exiting the pool safely.
  • Understanding poolside rules and listening to instructions.
  • Recognizing potential hazards in and around water.
  • Floating, treading water, and calling for help.
  • Staying calm in unexpected situations (e.g., falling in)
  • Knowing when and how to help others and when to call for help.
  • Safety awareness around open water (from preschool age onwards)

These skills are embedded into our lessons at every level, so children learn them naturally as part of their swimming journey.

Babies & toddlers

We introduce the basics through gentle, play-based learning. Babies learn to hold on to the pool edge, respond to simple instructions like “hold on” or “kick,” and begin early submersion techniques to build comfort and breath control.

Pre-school

Children explore independence and safe habits such as safely climbing out of the pool, rolling onto their back to float, and recognizing poolside rules. They also learn to move short distances to the wall or steps if they “fall in.”

Primary age

We teach practical safety skills like treading water, floating for longer periods, and safely jumping in. Children practice reacting to unexpected scenarios (in a calm, controlled way) and understand the importance of staying close to adults near water.

Older children & teens

Water safety becomes more advanced, with a focus on personal responsibility, helping others, and understanding the risks of open water environments. Teens learn how to stay safe at beaches, rivers, and lakes and how to assess situations before entering the water.
